Yemi Alade’s 2018 headline show at O₂ Academy Islington was a celebration of African womanhood,
stagecraft and global pop energy. Performing to a sold-out crowd, she brought her signature blend
of powerhouse vocals, choreography and cultural pride to London at a time when very few women in
Afrobeats were headlining UK stages.
The night cemented her status as one of the first female Afrobeats superstars to carry a full
international show on her own name. It also marked an important moment in SMADE’s mission to
build platforms for diverse African voices — proving that the movement included not just hitmakers,
but groundbreaking women redefining the genre.
